Tenth Annual Teen Photo Challenge Begins This Month
Are you ready for the Teen Photo Challenge at Lawrence Branch Library? Every year since 2007, Lawrence has hosted a photography contest for young people in grades 8 through 12. The contest has evolved to include a theme—this year’s is “Bookface”—and embrace changes in technology.
The Challenge starts on January 19, 2016, when registration kicks off at Lawrence High School and Lawrence Branch Library. After the February 6 deadline, a panel of professional photographers and artists handpicked by Branch Librarian Denise Campagna will then judge the photos on theme, perspective, lighting and visual interest. Library patrons will also have an opportunity to vote for the “People’s Choice” award winner.
Winners of the 2016 Teen Photo Challenge will be announced on March 1 at the Lawrence Branch Library and on the branch’s Facebook page. Prizes include $100, $50, and $25 Visa cards, publication in the Kalamazoo Gazette and Paw Paw Courier-Leader, and display on the Lawrence Branch Facebook page.
Ready to take your best shot? All you need is a digital camera or phone. Just email up to two images to Denise at dcampagna@vbdl.org by February 6. Remember to name each photograph. Photoshop is allowed, but the original images must be your own. Good luck!
Choosing Kindness

If I were allowed to only recommend one book for anyone to read, I would hands down always pick Wonder by R.J. Palacio. It was my favorite book of 2012 and still remains one of my top favorites today. Seriously, if you haven’t read it, go now…read it! Everyone should take the time and read Wonder…everyone. The message is clear and the message should be spread far and wide – Choose Kindness. Be Kind. Encourage Kindness.
So I was equally delighted this year when Palacio released Auggie & Me: Three Wonder Stories. My favorite story got to keep going, I was able to get closure on some of the side characters I came to know from Wonder. I was able to see kindness unfold yet again. I again had hope for kindness to spread.
I cannot spoil these stories for you. I can only hope that you will grow to love these stories just as much as I have. And remember: Choose Kindness. Spread Kindness. Be Kind.[/fusion_text][/fusion_builder_column][/fusion_builder_row][/fusion_builder_container]
