AND THE WINNER IS . . .

DECATUR, MICHIGAN – – – – – Sixty-four contenders. Six rounds. One winner. Van Buren District Library’s March Book Madness: Classics vs. the Currents is in the record books.

After hundreds of votes cast from Minneapolis to Philadelphia, Charlotte’s Web by E. B. White survived the week-long, lead changing Final Round to earn the crown as the 2019 Champion. Charlotte outlasted rival To Kill a Mockingbird by securing 53% of the votes.

Charlotte’s Web’s march to the finals included victories over The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Little Women, Wonder, and even The Cat in the Hat. To Kill a Mockingbird outlasted such illustrious titles as The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, The Stand, and Water for Elephants.

White’s classic novel tells the story of a little pig named Wilbur and his friend, Charlotte, a wise gray spider. First published in 1952, the novel gained affection from adults as well as children. In 2000, Publishers Weekly listed the book as the bestselling children’s paperback of all time. Copies of the 2019 Champion and all the other contenders are available at VBDL.
