ANTWERP SUNSHINE LIBRARY CELEBRATES SGT. PEPPER’S 50TH
MATTAWAN, MICHIGAN – – – – June 1 marks the 50th anniversary of the Beatles’ groundbreaking album, Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Who knew then that Sgt. Pepper’s invitation to enjoy the show, and sit back and let the evening go would create a decades-spanning reverence for what Rolling Stone calls the best rock album ever released.
According to music historian Howard Goodall in the L.A. Times, the “eclecticism of ‘Sgt. Pepper’s’ broad expanse of styles, genres and sounds, is not such a big deal [today]. But, for those of us who listened to it when it came out, it was a big shock to the system.”
To celebrate the anniversary and reissue of the landmark album, the Antwerp Sunshine Branch Library presents Beatles scholar Aaron Krerowicz’ 90-minute, multi-media presentation, The Beatles’ Alter Ego: Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, Monday, June 12, 6:30 pm
Krerowicz, a professional Beatles scholar, won a research grant through the University of Hartford in 2011 to study the band. In the past six years, he has presented his findings through more than 300 presentations in the United States and England. He is the author of four Beatles books and has created a series of original Beatles drawings. His program observes and discusses the album track-by-track, citing musical and historical precedents, and illustrates the development of songs through excerpts from interviews with the band members and clips of discarded tapes.
The program is free and open to the public. Antwerp Sunshine Library is located at 24823 Front Avenue in Mattawan. Van Buren District Library is headquartered in Decatur with branches in Bangor, Bloomingdale, Covert, Gobles, Lawrence and Mattawan.
