A Book Junkie!
My obsession began practically at birth sitting with my Dad while he read to me or sometimes I would rest on him while he read his book. Reading gives me the sense of calm & security as I felt in my youth. My cozy, comfy room where I usually read has a stack of books and I get very nervous if I get down to only one or two in the pile. Gotta feed this addiction!
Because my Dad was fascinated with history, I enjoy this genre. For a particularly excellent title that has history, mystery, thrills & chills; The Devil in the White City by Erik Larsen has it all! It follows the two year journey of Daniel Burnham, the architect and designer of the 1st World’s Fair in Chicago, aka, the World’s Columbian Exposition as the backdrop to the REAL story. H.H. Holmes pretending to be a doctor goes on a killing spree in the midst of the fair, preying on unsuspecting young women. It was estimated that he murdered from 27 – 200 people. Also, meet Fair attendees, Thomas Edison, Annie Oakley, Buffalo Bill, Susan B. Anthony along the way.
Will Burnham complete the buildings by the opening date?
Who will be Holmes’ next victim and when and how will he be caught?
Pick up this great book and prepare for a ride.
Many of the building from the fair still stand today as Museum and I’ve visited all of them throughout my life, so when this book came out, I quickly put my name on the list. I want everyone to enjoy it as much as I did.
Several other great historians to read and learn are Bill Bryson, Malcolm Gladwell and Doris Kearns Goodwin.
