Van Buren District Library Media by Mail

The Van Buren District Library offers homebound delivery for VBDL service area residents who find it difficult or impossible to visit the library in person and have no one in the household able to visit the library for them qualify to receive library materials through the mail for free! Our only requirement is a valid library card and your status as a homebound patron!

How does Media by Mail work?

Start by completing an application, either online or by downloading and mailing it to the library. Once you’re registered, library materials can be mailed directly to you.

You can request specific items by logging into your account and placing holds, or let library staff select materials based on your favorite genres and authors.

Your items will arrive by mail in a reusable bag with return postage included. When you’re ready to send them back, simply pack everything in the same bag, attach the return postage, and leave it for your mail carrier to pick up.

Are there any limits to what I can borrow?

A minimum of 2 items may be mailed out. While there is no limit on the number of items, there is a weight limit of up to 10 pounds. A typical hardcover novel will weigh approximately 1.25 lbs. You may only have 1 package at a time, and all items must be returned before another package may be sent. We cannot send out MelCat items, hotspots, items that have been in the library’s collection for less than 180 days, or any other materials prohibited by USPS Media Mail guidelines.

Who qualifies for Media by Mail?

Media by Mail is only available for homebound patrons who find it difficult to impossible to visit the library in person. This can often be due to illness, long-term or short-term disability, or age. Media by Mail patrons must have a valid Van Buren District Library resident or property owner card. It is not available to reciprocal or purchased cards.

The library may request evidence from a recognized authority such as a medical doctor or social worker that the applicant meets one of these criteria.
