by Sigmund Brouwer
This is a World War II novel set in the colony Dutch East Indies or now what we know as Indonesia. The Japanese occupied the island between the years of 1942 and 1945 and placed the privileged Dutch women, girls, and boys under 15 in concentration camps while taking the men and older teenage boys to work camps. The main characters are members of the Prin family, especially ten year old Jeremiah Prin who becomes the caretaker of his mother and siblings. Survival is the primary goal of all who are crowded into this concentration camp. Many don’t survive. Jeremiah plays an important role in securing the much needed medicine the doctors are denied. He takes risks moving back and forth between the camp and the town outside, befriending a local boy who helps him find the supplies needed.
This historical fictional novel gives a vivid perspective of the brutality of a Japanese concentration camp and the continuing toll it took on families for many years after the war ended. This is a story of the risk, struggle and threats prisoners faced every day. At times the novel is harsh and difficult to read. This book is the Bangor Branch Library’s Book Talk November selection.[/fusion_text][/fusion_builder_column][/fusion_builder_row][/fusion_builder_container]
