Whether we call ourselves Michiganders, Michiganians, or something else, we all identify with those giant bodies of water that shape our state, literally and figuratively. The lakes inspire us all in some way. Who hasn’t spent some time strolling along the beach and wondered, “How far could I go if I just kept walking…”?
Many people have asked that or a similar question and have been inspired to walk, drive, or sail around some or all of the lakes. Their journey begins in response to some need deeper than a long weekend of R & R; there’s a curiosity about the people and the land that’s tied to all this water, and as clichéd as it sounds, there’s a wish to find one’s true self. And I’ll be honest here, if I walked around Lake Michigan I’d be thrilled at how much better shape I’d be in!
With another winter ready to rear its ugly head there’s little chance to spend much time along the lakes for the next few months. But maybe now is the perfect time to plan your journey for next summer—see how far you can walk, or drive, or sail.
