Who has the greatest success against the most impossible odds? Katniss in Hunger Games (Suzanne Collins) where children are made to kill each other in an arena? Beatrice in Divergent (Veronica Roth) where Chicago is a ghastly social experiment? Miranda and her family in the Last Survivors (Susan Beth Pfeffer) where the moon is plummeting toward earth and (almost) everyone is cold and starving?
My new favorites may be June and Day (Daniel) in the Legend series (Marie Lu). They live in a future world where rising sea levels have reworked the map. Much of the east coast of the former United States is under water and the push of refugees toward the west has created two warring countries: The Republic, controlled by a ruthless dictator called the Elector; and the mysterious Colonies, controlled by… different extremists.
Day is from the slums of Los Angeles, in The Republic, where the Elector engineers plagues and rigs tests to reduce the population. Day steals food and medicine from the rich to help his family and neighbors. June is from the “gem” sectors of The Republic and has grown up with every wealthy advantage. She has a promising career waiting for her in the military.
You might think that when “boy meets girl” they will fall into each other’s arms and live happily ever after, but each is involved in a death in the other’s family. The odds are definitely not in their favor as they battle for survival, friendship, and social justice. But be warned, the plot takes many unexpected turns. Every time you think you understand where the story is going, there is another twist, including a fascinating trip to Antarctica!
